Founded in 1967 by Phil Burkart Sr., and evolved into central New York’s premier engine, machine and speed shop today’s Burkart Automotive represents two generations of family-owned and operated success. Currently the area’s racing and performance hotspot, Burkart Automotive and Phil Burkart Sr. helped mainstream drag racing by bringing such big names as Bruce Larson, Tommy Ivo, King and Marshall and an array of other kings of the quarter mile on site for appearances as they worked their way across the northeast racing circuit.

Racing and high performance is a staple of the Burkart family; Burkart Automotive is owned and operated by Phil Burkart Jr., who, under the tutelage of Phil Sr. has been involved with the store since his first steps and now takes part in every aspect of the operation.

The family here at Burkart Automotive remembers Phil Burkart Sr. 1943-2013 – “without him we would not be here” – not a day goes by that we don’t remember him, think of him, quote him, talk of the things he said and did to make his mark on the world and our world here at Burkart Automotive. Thank you Phil Sr. you are with us everyday!

The Early Days of Local Drag Racing

Phil Jr.’s own racing career anchors his love of high performance and speed. Since his first drag race at Cicero, NY’s Esta Drag Strip at age 14, Phil has had a taste for racing, licensing and competing for an NHRA Top Alcohol funny car in 1991-1997, then moving to NHRA in a nitro funny car in 1998. Phil’s professional drag racing career includes driving for Rex Nix, Paul Gratton in the Nitro Fish funny car, Bill Blomgren, Geronimo funnycar Paul Smith Racing, culminating with many years behind the wheel of the Worsham Racing Checker Schucks Kragen funny car team, and hired to pilot the Castrol GTX funny car of none other than the King of the Drag Strip, John Force. Recently Phil has driven for Jay Blake in the Permatex top alcohol funny car. Phil Jr. is the winner of several national event championships and holds trophies that are proudly displayed at our shop. Phil’s racing career is the source of great pride for the family here at Burkart Automotive. When not participating in national events Phil enjoys the hands on local racing at the area tracks where he got is start. Phil still races, locally, running a SC dragster and helping other local racers at Central New York tracks. You will find Phil actively involved, wrenching and driving at these local tracks most weekends. From national tracks with world famous celebrities to local racers Phil’s love of the sport keeps him involved in all aspects of racing professionally and personally.

Phil Jr. has been passing along his experience to his two daughters who are following the tradition of racing in the family. Phil’s older daughter is running a Super Comp dragster while Phil’s younger daughter races a jr dragster. Both have the pride and love of the sport much like their father and grandfather.
